Why Wax vs Sealant vs Ceramic Coatings Might Be the Wrong Comparison

Stop Comparing Products. Start Comparing Problems.

When people are looking into ceramic coatings they usually end up comparing wax vs sealants vs ceramic coatings.

And that's a good place to start.

All three aim to enhance your vehicle's look. However, only one offers real protection.

After 10 years in business, I've noticed that the happiest vehicle owners aren't always those who choose the best product.

They're the ones who chose the right solution for their situation.

And to find out what the right solution is, you need to ask a different question.

The Problem With Wax vs Sealants vs Ceramic Coating Comparisons

Most comparisons focus on price, durability, gloss, and protection levels. They look at what one product does or doesn't do compared to another.

While those aspects are important, they only show what the product does. They don’t reveal if it fits your lifestyle, expectations, or goals.

It's like comparing a pickup truck, a sports car, and an SUV.

You can compare the specs of those vehicles all day. But until you know how you'll use one, those numbers won’t help you choose the right one.

I’d love to own a Porsche. But sadly, my detailing supplies won’t all fit inside. When I need to take care of some private collections, a truck is the only sensible option for me.

Why People Compare Wax, Sealants, and Ceramic Coatings

People often compare all three products since each can enhance a vehicle's appearance. So from the outside, they all appear to solve the same problem.

And I understand why people compare them.

If you've spent years waxing your car, ceramic coating may seem like just another pricey product. It promises protection and shine, but it feels similar to what you already use.

But that's where the similarities end.

Once you see past the improved look, the difference is much bigger than what most comparison articles show.

The word "protection" is often misused in the industry. It can mean many things to different people. Ask 10 people what protection means, and you'll hear 10 different answers.

It could mean:

  • UV protection

  • Chemical protection

  • Scratch protection

  • Scratch resistance

They're all talking about these things and more, yet marketers lump them all under one word called protection.

A good example is that wax and sealants provide some UV protection. However, compared to a ceramic coating, that’s where the protection stops.

Protection from bug guts and bird droppings is no better than not having a wax or sealant on your car. You have minutes on a vehicle that has nothing on it before a bird dropping starts to etch the paint on a hot, sunny day.

A wax or sealant buys you a few more minutes. Ceramic coatings are totally different because they actually protect against that acidic bird dropping. They have the chemical resistance and it's going to protect your paint. Something that waxes and sealants don't have.

When I began detailing, I handled conversations like most detailers do.

I’d explain the durability, the hydrophobics, the slickness, the gloss, and the protection. I was giving customers the information that was fact, but many people still weren't sure what to do next.

And looking back at that now, I was helping them compare products instead of helping them make a decision.

The Better Question: What Problem Are You Trying To Solve?

So instead of asking or trying to determine which product is best, what you should be asking is what am I trying to do? What problem am I trying to solve? Which product is going to work best for me and my situation?

What if you enjoy maintaining your vehicle?

You enjoy washing it, you enjoy waxing it, you like spending time with it. A ceramic coating might not be worth the extra cost in that case.

This is where I came from. I really enjoyed spending time working on my vehicles and cleaning them and detailing them. If you tried to sell me I'm reducing the amount of time I spent taking care of them that wouldn't have been a benefit. To me, the maintenance was part of the enjoyment.

Maybe you want less work.

Maybe you're tired of applying something to the vehicle all the time whether it's a wax or sealant.

Maybe you're looking for an easier way to wash the vehicle or to make washing easier. Are you looking for less effort to maintain the appearance of your vehicle.

Many customers tell me they got ceramic coating for one reason. Now, they’re doing it again on a new vehicle or renewing the original coating. Why? Because it’s so easy to wash!

When you understand that your time is better spent elsewhere, that's a huge benefit.

Maybe you're looking to preserve the vehicle long term.

This is where a ceramic coating often makes the most sense.

The focus isn't on the shine or slickness. It's about keeping something valuable in good condition over the years.

Now I've realized over the years that it's always been about preserving things that matter.

Weather it's a collector piece a vehicle that you had just had completely restored. The daily driver. That first brand new truck that you needed.

The motivation is always the same. You're not trying to make it look good for the weekend you're trying to keep it in the best condition possible for years.

Or maybe you just want your vehicle to look better.

You may not be looking for the most durable solution. You may just be looking for a simple way to upgrade the appearance.

Why The "Best" Product Often Leads To The Wrong Decision

A ceramic coating that lasts for 7 years isn't automatically better than a wax.

It's only better if the benefits of having something to last that long on your vehicle aligns with your priorities.

This is something that I deal with quite often in my conversations with people.

They often seek a ceramic coating for a problem that isn’t there. They also overlook the importance of regular vehicle maintenance.

They're hoping that a ceramic coating will give them a free pass when it comes to taking care of the exterior of the vehicle. In that case, a ceramic coating doesn't make any sense. They're wasting money on something that they'll never really benefit from. Because it's not something that they're doing now.

You're not seeking the longest-lasting, most expensive, or most advanced product. You want a solution that helps you use, maintain, and value your vehicle.

The right answer or actually the right product is determined by the problem you're trying to solve.

Stop Shopping For Products. Start Shopping For Outcomes.

I've talked to a few owners over the years who were interested in getting a ceramic coating. But they planned to continue running their vehicles through the automatic car wash, one in particular multiple times per week.

They discussed how they cared for their vehicle and what they wanted. Then, they realized that a ceramic coating wouldn't provide the experience they hoped for.

Could they have purchased one? Absolutely.

But they likely wouldn't have seen the benefits that made a coating worth the investment in the first place. Spending $600, $900, or even $1,500 on a coating wasn't solving a problem for them. It was simply buying a product.

Vehicle owners who were happiest chose solutions that matched their needs for use, maintenance, and value.
